The treasure?
Everybody likes a good story. Jesus told great stories.
One of these is about a man who discovers a stash of precious treasure buried within the boundary of some unused land. He immediately returns home and sells everything in order to buy the land so that he can then possess the hidden treasure. All his friends and family and the rest of the world think that he has gone crazy to buy this bit of seemingly worthless ground. But of course the man realises that what he has found is a treasure which far surpasses everything else he valued.
Why did Jesus tell the story? He was speaking about something he called the Kingdom of God. He meant the rule and influence of God in our lives both now and in the future. Jesus taught that this was essential for us and the way God intended for us to live. Through the Bible He has made it very clear that the only way to enter into the Kingdom of God is through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and faith in what he has accomplished. This is good news - this is the treasure! For some the cost involved to receive the treasure may be great. However when compared to the value of the treasure itself, such a cost becomes a worthwhile investment. One famous treasure finder, Paul (who you can read about on the finders page) summed it all up when he said that he counted everything else to be rubbish when compared to the surpassing worth of knowing the Lord Jesus Christ. You can read this story for yourself and many others about the treasure (some stories make it more obvious that others) in the Bible. It is useful to understand that the Bible is made up of 66 separate books. It has one Author, but many people held the pen during the period of several thousand years. Ages ago some people thought it would be helpful to divide each book into chapters and label each chapter with verses to help people like us find our way around it. All quite sensible really. One of those books is called 'The gospel (which is an old word for world-changing good news) according to Matthew'. It is in effect Matthew’s witness statement about Jesus. For example you can read how Jesus changed Matthew’s own life in Chapter 9 from verse 9 to 13. In Chapter 13 verse 44 of Matthew’s gospel Jesus tells the story about the treasure in a field. |
